Congenital leg shortening

Clinical Condition

A 16-year-old female patient had a left leg shortening of 6 cm and a pronounced varus deformity (bow leg) at the end of leg growth. The X-ray showed the shortening and deformity affecting both the upper and lower leg bones.

Treatment

In a single operation, both the correction of the axis and the implantation of one intramedullary distraction nail each in the upper and lower leg were performed via a skin incision of only 2 cm in length and several small stab incisions. The deformity of the lower leg was already corrected during surgery. The simultaneous lengthening of the upper and lower leg took a total of 4 weeks. The implants were removed after 18 months.

Result

The final examination showed equal leg lengths and a completely corrected alignment. The patient could walk and do sports without any restrictions. The scars were almost invisible.
